This course is designed to provide you with both understanding and practical skills in Power BI. Over the course of three days, we not only show you how to do things, but also explain why so that you can work independently after the course.
The following topics will be covered:
Part 1 – Introduction and Overview
You will gain a clear understanding of how Power BI works in practice and how all the components fit together.
- Introduction to decision support with Power BI and Self-Service BI
- Understand the flow from data source to published report
- Learn key BI concepts needed to work effectively
Part 2 – Data Transformation with Power Query
You will learn how to prepare data properly—an essential skill for building scalable and maintainable BI solutions.
- Retrieve and combine data from multiple sources
- Clean, transform, and structure data according to best practices
- Create a functional date dimension in M
- Use parameters for more dynamic solutions
- Organize and structure your data projects
Part 3 – The Data Model and Data Modeling
You will learn how the data model is structured, why it is designed that way, and how it affects what we see in our visuals.
- Understand the principles of a robust and scalable data model
- Manage relationships, filter direction, and cardinality
- Ensure correct data types and sorting
- Understand how filters affect visualizations (“under the hood”)
- Prepare the model for RLS (Row-Level Security)
Part 4 – DAX and Custom Calculations
We go through the fundamentals of Power BI’s formula language, DAX. The focus is on calculating correctly depending on filters, time, or other criteria.
- Best practices for syntax and model organization
- Create measures, calculated columns, and tables
- Understand and control filter context
- Troubleshoot when numbers don’t add up
- Use CALCULATE to control calculations
- Work with common Time Intelligence calculations (YTD, PY, R12, etc.)
Part 5 – The Visual Report
You will learn to build reports that not only look good but also deliver insights.
- Structure and design report pages
- Create and format visualizations
- Use hierarchies for better analysis
- Enhance insights with conditional formatting
- Perform what-if analysis using DAX and field parameters
Part 6 – The Power BI Service
You will learn how to publish, create dashboards, share, and continue working with reports in the Power BI Service.
- Publish reports in different ways
- Create dashboards
- Use built-in analytical features such as Q&A, Quick Insights, and automated reports
- Share reports securely and efficiently via Power BI apps or individual objects
- Collaborate in workspaces
- Export to PowerPoint and PDF
Part 7 – Governance and Configuration
You will learn how to manage operations, security, and automation.
- Set up a gateway for on-premises data sources
- Configure scheduled data refresh
- Monitor report usage with usage metrics
- Manage organization-level settings
- Assign and manage security (RLS)
